Michael Bloomberg and Susan Brown-Meyer were married from 1975 to 1993. They have two children together. One of their children, Georgina Bloomberg, is a socialite and equestrian. Michael Bloomberg has been dating Diana Taylor, his current spouse, since 2000.
Michael Bloomberg’s Personal Life
Michael Bloomberg was born on February 14, 1942, in Boston, Massachusetts. He was the son of a middle-class family and had been in the Boy Scouts, attaining the rank of Eagle Scout. He graduated from Johns Hopkins University in 1964 with a degree in electrical engineering. He later received an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School.
After leaving Harvard, Michael began working on Wall Street the very next day, taking a job at Solomon Brothers for a salary of $9,000 per annum. In 1973, he became a partner at Solomon Brothers and headed its equity trading. He was eventually laid off in 1981, after a rival bank acquired Solomon’s firm. When he was ultimately dismissed, he owned $10 million in Solomon equity. That is about $30 million today, adjusted for inflation.
Having no job, only cash in the bank, Bloomberg started a company he called Innovative Market Systems. His epiphany came in the form of a revelation: financial services would be willing to pay dearly for rapid access to high-quality business data. Merrill Lynch ordered $30 million worth of Innovative’s “Market Master” terminals within a year. These machines were the forerunners of his now omnipresent Bloomberg Terminals.
Within a decade of going live, the newly rechristened Bloomberg LP had installed tens of thousands of terminals. There are more than 300,000 Bloomberg Terminals worldwide at the time of writing. An individual terminal brings in more than $20,000 a year without bulk pricing.
By the early 1990s, the company was valued at $2 billion. These days, Bloomberg earns at least $10 billion a year. The company has more than 20,000 employees worldwide.
Michael Bloomberg As Mayor of New York
In our Billionaires Bunker, Michael resigned as CEO in 2001 to run for mayor of New York City. Shortly after the September 11 terror attacks, he was elected. He was a lifelong Democrat but actually ran as a Republican. He was sworn in as the 108th mayor of New York in January 2002. In 2008, after serving two terms, he had the City Council change the rules so he could run for a third term. They did, and he won.
Michael Bloomberg spent $268 million of his own money during his terms in office on re-election campaigns. He also spent $890,000 on serving free breakfast and lunch for his staff during all three of his terms.
As mayor, he was eligible to accrue a $2.7 million salary over three terms, but chose instead to accept only $1 per year. He also funded his travel and security, totaling over $6 million in costs during his term.
After his third and final term, Michael returned to lead Bloomberg LP as its CEO.
Michael Bloomberg Wealth
When Mid Breaker began calculating Michael Bloomberg’s net worth in 2008, we estimated it at $12 billion. A year later, we revised our estimate to $16 billion. He was valued at $22 billion in 2012. At the time, he was the 11th-richest person in the US, 20th in the world. His net worth soared to over $43 billion by 2015, and he was the 6th richest man in the US.
But, as of this writing (fact-check me on the day of publication), Bloomberg lists him as the 17th-richest person in the world and #10 in the US. Most of his net worth comes from the estimated value of his closely held company, Bloomberg LP. The company, which generates an estimated $10 billion in revenue, would be worth at least $40 billion on the open market if it were ever put up for sale.
More likely, perhaps, it’s worth $60-70 billion, but there may be no companies or private equity firms in the world willing to plunk down that much cash all at once for the firm. Bloomberg has said that, if elected president of the United States, he would sell the company.
