Sydney Sweeney stepped out for the first time since her provocative American Eagle campaign was released and made a splash at an Aug 3 screening of her movie Americana in Los Angeles, which costars Halsey and Simon Rex.

To the premiere on Sunday, Sweeney wore a corseted Danielle Frankel gown that featured a tulle skirt and teamed it with a wide headband and Effy Jewelry to finish off her look. The G.O.A.T Music: Though shot in 2022, Americana will officially debut on August 15, via Deadline, and it’s been described (courtesy of People) as the “wildly entertaining modern day Western.

Sydney’s appearance comes two days after American Eagle addressed the controversy around the actress’s “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans” campaign, which ignited a backlash that accused the brand of promoting eugenics. In response, the company posted to Instagram saying that the ad “is and always was about the jeans. Her jeans. Her story.”

“We’re still going to celebrate how you wear your AE jeans with confidence, your way,” the statement added. “Everyone looks great in a good pair of jeans.” (Sweeney has not commented on the matter, for her part.)

Even though an online firestorm in recent weeks has blanketed the exponentially popular company with negative allegations, the retail hotshot behind it all seems to be unharmed: The New York Times reported that American Eagle’s stock rose 10 percent over the first 4 days of Sweeney’s campaign. ImageVanity Fair said the ad had added more than $200 million to the value of the company.

Alongside her acting work — roles in Americana, and the upcoming third season of HBO’s Euphoria, among a pile of other projects — Sweeney realized she was becoming an increasingly prominent spokeswoman for various digital campaigns. “If I’d just been an actress, I wouldn’t be able to live my life in L.A.,” Sweeney said in 2022 to The Hollywood Reporter. “I do deals because I have to. They don’t pay actors the way they used to, and with streamers, you don’t get residuals.”

In Sydney life outside of work, Sweeney said in a May 31 article by The Times that she was single and “learning a lot about myself, spending more time with my friends. And I’m loving it.”

Sydney Sweeney broke up with Jonathan Davino earlier this year, and when it comes to dating, told Cosmopolitan in a 2022 cover story that, “I don’t date actors or musicians or anyone in entertainment because I can just be normal Syd that way, and it’s easiest. I have a really good support system.”

“I have people who will fight for me and let me be on the pedestal and shine without making it seem like, ‘You know what? I’m shining too bright and I need to step down,’” she continued, adding, “I look for a best friend. I have to be able to, like, go through life with someone who I just literally want to hang out with 24/7 and never get bored of and laugh. And we laugh every single day.”

Sydney Sweeney — who watched her very own Americana debut at the weekend — was singing karaoke with two fellow Euphoria cast members, Hunter Schafer and Maude Apatow, on August 2 in Santa Monica according to Page Six.
